In order to achieve future emission standards further steps are necessary to improve the combustion process of Diesel engines. This includes not only the optimisation of the combustion itself but the consequent development of control strategies. In this context further developments will be focused both on the control strategy of the injection and the gas control system. This work continues the development of the cylinder pressure based management concept shown in [Jes 2003], which provides a closed loop control strategy of the injection. The main objective is a model based closed loop control of the gas system by variations of the exhaust gas recirculation valve and the variable geometry turbocharger. The control system relies on estimated state variables. These are calculated by a physical based model of the engine gas system, in which direct information of the cylinder pressure signal is used. The approach initially starts with an investigation of the nowadays introduced control strategies. With this knowledge a new control strategy for the engine gas system is derived. After the control strategy has been implemented with a Rapid-Prototyping-System it is tested on a test rig and in a prototype vehicle. Finally, the possibility to reduce emissions by the developed control scheme is evaluated.
